AOL to lay off 700 employees

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

“Reducing our workforce is never easy, particularly in the current climate, but our goal in doing this is to provide our core businesses the resources they need to thrive,” Falco wrote. “Please know that, as always, we’ll be doing everything we can to help and support those affected, including offering severance packages and other services.”

An AOL spokesman said the company had no comment.

Kara Swisher first reported the layoffs and reprinted the memo on her Boomtown blog.

AOL will lay off 10 percent of its workers, about 700 people, to help it better deal with the deepening economic recession, according to a companywide e-mail sent on Wednesday.

The reductions, which will be completed by the end of March, will be accompanied by a consolidation of business groups and facilities as the company focuses on its three core businesses: Platform-A advertising, People Networks social networking, and MediaGlow content, AOL Chief Executive Randy Falco wrote in the e-mail, obtained by CNET News. Employees will also not be getting merit raises this year, he said.

A decline in ad revenue at AOL helped lead to flat revenue and earnings at parent company Time Warner in its last quarterly financial report. Time Warner reportedly was in talks last year with Yahoo on a sale of AOL.

Designing the Kindle 2

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Watch CBS Videos Online

“Audio books are a great experience with a trained narrator or sometimes the author (reading the book),” Freed said.

SEATTLE–Amazon wanted to make the Kindle 2 hot, but not too hot.

Although he wouldn’t say just when people will have Kindle content on their cell phones, Freed did confirm that one won’t need to have a Kindle device to read Kindle content, though he suspects some of those who try Kindle on a cell phone will ultimately buy Amazon’s device.

“One of the great things about Kindle is it doesn’t ever get hot,” Amazon Vice President Ian Freed said in an interview at Amazon’s downtown office here. That’s important, Freed said, given that the company has one main goal with the Kindle–making the product as invisible to users as possible when they are reading.

Getting more content onto the Kindle remains a goal, Freed said. Although the company has 240,000 books–and nearly all of The New York Times bestseller list–Freed said the company’s long-term goal is to get every book, including out-of-print titles, onto the device.

Amazon, he said, would certainly be happy to talk to newspapers interested in trying something more radical. “We’d certainly be open to working with any newspapers.”

It gave it a slimmer design and more storage, but there are a lot of things Amazon could have added, but didn’t. Things like a color display not only would make the device pricier and give it a shorter battery life, but would also make the gadget uncomfortable to hold.

“I’ll leave it to others to figure out what the economic model will be for newspapers,” he said. “Our newspaper customers have been happy working with us. It’s a new source of revenue for them.”

On the text-to-speech front, Amazon has come under fire for trying to take over for the audio book market, but Freed noted that only a fraction of books even come out in audio form. He also noted that the feature works with blogs, newspapers, and other content.

Newspapers and blogs are also important, though Freed wouldn’t say whether he bought into the notion that some newspapers would be wise to stop home delivery and instead pass out Kindles to subscribers.

“The most important thing for the Kindle to do is to disappear,” Freed said. That was the goal with the first device and was also a key factor in deciding what would go in the sequel, which started shipping on Monday. There are the obvious factors, like the thinner, sleeker design. But there are also things like an improved cellular modem. As a result, Kindle users will find themselves out of range in fewer places to get updates or buy a new book.

The cell phone option, like a controversial new text-to-speech feature built into the Kindle 2, is more designed for short bits of content than as the primary mode of reading, Freed said. A cell phone is good for those unexpected times where one has a few minutes to read, while text-to-speech is good for those who are right in the middle of a cliffhanger and have to get in the
car or cook dinner.

One of the biggest new features is one that is impossible to see–the new Whisper Sync feature that will eventually let people read the same electronic book on multiple devices, including Kindles and cell phones.

Qwest union workers reject deal

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Qwest representatives told the AP that the contract proposal included raises of more than 9 percent over three years. It also increased pension benefits for new retirees, and it would have increased base pay of sales staff. But it also would have added a monthly premium for health coverage. Previously, employees paid only enrollment fees.

Union workers at Qwest Communications International rejected a proposed three-year contract on Tuesday. But so far, there doesn’t seem to be a threat of a strike.

Union members had authorized a strike when the contract expired in August, but the workers continued working. The two sides reached a tentative agreement days later.

Representatives of the Communications Workers of America and Qwest said they’d meet again this week to continue talks, according to the Associated Press. CWA represents roughly 29,000 Qwest employees in 13 states. Qwest is the primary phone company in 14 Western states.

Dawdle games the console game economy

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I had a quick meeting last week with Sachin Agarwal, the CEO of the online games marketplace, Dawdle. There’s nothing technically revolutionary about this service. It, like countless online auction, classified, and swapping sites, lets users offload their used goods (in this case, console game hardware and software) and buy other users’ goods, too.

Store owners could just list their items on eBay, but this focused site makes things a bit easier. The interface is designed so that bored sales clerks can enter in games when they buy them from customers, or in the lulls between customers. There’s no fancy description to enter, just condition of the package. There’s, as yet, no pricing advice on the site (although an upcoming partnership might take care of that), so the service does require its users to know the market they are playing in.

What’s interesting about Dawdle, though, is the economy it fits into. The used market for console games is peculiar, at least compared to other digital media (like CDs and movies), in that it is a sizable portion–Agarwal estimates half–of the entire gaming market. That’s half of an $18 billion (U.S.) economy that the standard big-box stores (Wal-Mart, Best Buy) are not seriously involved in. But in malls all over the country, mom-and-pop independent storefronts and GameXChange franchises do a healthy business in the resale of used computer games.

Dawdle has a consumer-facing site, where people can buy and sell their used games, but its real volume comes from the used game shops, which can use the service to put the games they buy on the broader market. (Most retail game franchises prohibit their stores from running their own online businesses.)

A new design for the site is coming October 8, as well as an improved search function and integration with the Wolftrack game store point-of-sale system.

I like this service because it adds size, and thus efficiency, to a market of otherwise isolated storefronts.

Vimeo cuts the clutter with a sexy redesign

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I’ve embedded a look at the new features after the break.

The new gallery view makes the video player the center of attention, and puts a playlist underneath which channel owners can rearrange.

“I don’t know what the future of screencasts are,” Pile says. “We do not want to be the company that people use to externalize their hosting costs.”

The change is one of many for the small video company. Pile says 2009 is going to bring big things. “People want videos all over the place,” he says. As a result, the company is planning to switch over to H.264 encoding to widen distribution. This will let users watch their videos in places besides their computer, like iPods, iPhones, and on game consoles.

Web video host Vimeo has rolled out a really cool new update to its content channel pages. Channel owners can now design their video pages with one of 10 new themes, and pick from three different layouts, including a new “gallery” view which scales up the main video player into glorious 940×530 (up from the standard 640×360).

In a call with Andrew Pile, Vimeo’s director of development, he told me the change was all about making it easier to find content, as well as giving users more control over the presentation. He said users were complaining that channel pages were getting too cluttered. As a result, blogs, calendars, files, and forums have all been removed, putting more focus on the videos, which users can now rearrange.

Vimeo is also planning to tighten down on freeloading companies who are simply using its service to host videos about their latest features. As a result, screencasts may be the next thing to get banned from the service. Last year Vimeo took a stand on users uploading footage of video games with the defense that it went against the creative concept of the site. This was met with a mixed user response. Vimeo’s hardcore users were happy to see the gaming content go, while others cried foul about censorship.

At the same time, companies that may have flocked to the service for its fluid player and HD-quality streaming video aren’t given many options. Vimeo does not offer a white label or “professional” hosting service, nor is it in the immediate plans. Late last year Vimeo introduced a “plus” service, although that was mainly to give its power users a higher upload limit and access to new features like statistical analytics–something that’s due in the next few weeks.

FamilyBuilder offers genealogy research across soc

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

The cheek-swab DNA test kit will be available in mid-October for $59.95.

The company, which launched in June 2007, released the first version of its cross-network, cross-platform Web site that allows people to search across all the social networks.

The service has 4.2 million users, who have added more than 21 million family members, many between the ages of 20 and 35, the company said.

FamilyBuilder allows people to do genealogy research and find and connect with family members via Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Hi5, and Orkut. The service offers one place to manage all the information from across the networks.

SAN DIEGO–FamilyBuilder demonstrated at DemoFall on Tuesday software that is letting people link together family tree information from Facebook and other social networks. They also offer a DNA test kit.
